Sighting in Barret-de-Lioure, July 8, 2008

Drôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 8, 2008 in Barret-de-Lioure (Drôme, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 9:25 p.m., from the top of a mountain, two witnesses noticed a very bright point of light that appeared and disappeared several times in the sky. They located it with the finder scope of an astronomical telescope, and each of them then looked at it through that instrument in turn. Both described an egg-shaped object, steel grey in colour, moving slowly. One of the two said its motion was like that of a pendulum. The object moved off toward the south and then vanished.

The investigator sent to the site by GEIPAN found nothing unusual. He confirmed the account and the good faith of one of the witnesses; the other was not present during his visit, which took place a month after the sighting. The witnesses were regarded as qualified, being used to intensive observation by day and by night, so the case was rated as having good consistency. Its strangeness was judged high because of the shape of the object seen through the 9x50 finder. The case was classified D1: unexplained observation, moderately strange, of good consistency.
