Sighting in Libourne, October 3, 2007

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on October 3, 2007 in Libourne (Gironde, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class A).

What happened

On three mornings, 2, 3 and 5 October 2007, several people found rings of black deposit on their lawns. The rings had appeared overnight. They measured between about 5.80 m and 10 m across, and the black band was roughly 30 cm wide.

The gendarmerie and GEIPAN carried out investigations and took samples. These were handed over to the mycology department of the faculty of pharmacy in Toulouse. The analyses identified an exceptional growth of myxomycetes of the genus Badhamia, organisms related to fungi and sitting between the animal and plant kingdoms. The case was classified A (identified): the black circles, several metres in diameter, were caused by these myxomycetes.
