Sighting in Lieu-Saint-Amand, October 9, 2012

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 9, 2012 in Lieu-Saint-Amand (Nord, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 11:32 pm, two people watched a white point of light move quickly across a dark, starry sky. It crossed from east to west in a matter of seconds. Only one witness account was submitted to the GEIPAN. On the same day, about twenty minutes earlier, a similar observation had been reported in Limoges.

The speed and path of the light suggest a bolide, meaning a large shooting star produced by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. However, the lack of a trail is unusual. The event does not appear in the BOAM, the meteor observers' database. The bolide hypothesis remains plausible, particularly as the Delta Aurigids meteor shower peaked on 10 October, but the available information is not enough to confirm it. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for insufficient data.
