Sighting in Limoges, October 9, 2012

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on October 9, 2012 in Limoges (Haute-Vienne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness was in their garden between 11:00 and 11:30 p.m. when they saw a white light with a small bluish halo move quickly across a sky with a few clouds. About five minutes later, the witness concluded that they had seen a shooting star.

The investigation noted that a white point crossing the sky in a few seconds is consistent with a bolide, meaning a large shooting star caused by a meteoroid entering the atmosphere. However, the lack of a trail is unusual. The event does not appear in the BOAM, the database of meteor observers. The information gathered was not enough to confirm the bolide hypothesis, though it remained plausible, since the Delta Aurigids peaked on 10 October. A similar observation was reported the same day, about twenty minutes later, at Lieu-Saint-Amand (59).

GEIPAN classified the case as C because of insufficient information.
