Sighting in Loyettes, August 2, 2019

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 2, 2019 in Loyettes (Ain, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In the late afternoon, the witness was beside a swimming pool with three other people when they noticed three objects passing silently across a clear sky. They described the objects as having an unusual shape: a round center with something like wings on each side, and a rather grey color. The three objects were identical and the same size, and they flew in a straight line, keeping the same distance from one another.

After six to seven seconds, they separated and went off in different directions, and the witness lost sight of them. Only one account was collected, even though several people were present, and there is no photo.

The investigation rated the case as having medium strangeness and medium consistency. It considered a misidentification of drones or of birds, since the description fits both. Birds seemed the more likely explanation, given the round, grey, winged objects and the lack of noise, although it is impossible to verify whether birds were on that path at the time. However, it is hard to explain why the witness would not have recognized birds in broad daylight under a clear sky, so this hypothesis could not be retained. GEIPAN classified the case as C, for lack of reliable information.
