Sighting in Lusignan, February 28, 1993
Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on February 28, 1993 in Lusignan (Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).
What happened
Early in the morning, around 5:30 or 5:45 am, a driver was travelling along a departmental road between two towns when they saw a very powerful flash of white light to their left. They then made out a dome-shaped object with three luminous circles. The sighting lasted only 3 to 4 seconds, just long enough to keep driving, and part of it was seen through the rear-view mirror. The witness did not stop, so could not follow how the object changed. They went to the gendarmerie the evening of the following day to report what they had seen.
The witness put the object at no more than 2 m above the ground, about 300 m away, a distance the mapping confirmed given where the wood lay relative to the road. At that range a height is hard to judge, and the intensity of the lights, which the witness stressed, may have prevented them from telling whether the lights were attached to the ground. The strange feature described, an object off the ground, could therefore not be confirmed. The gendarmerie also placed the object at a drivable dirt track.
GEIPAN re-examined this case, formerly classified D by SEPRA. It considers it highly probable that one or more vehicles with powerful lighting were involved (agricultural machinery, a hunter's 4x4), even at that early hour. The witness's perception is not in question, but the poor viewing conditions make the account weak, though still sufficient to support this hypothesis. The case is classified B: ground lights.
