Sighting in Lyon, May 25, 1979

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 25, 1979 in Lyon (Rhône, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Shortly after one in the morning, two police officers on duty noticed a moving light in the sky that caught their attention. Flying low, four oval lights, white with a yellowish tinge, gradually passed over them and then changed direction. The witnesses could not say whether the lights belonged to a single object or were separate phenomena. They heard a faint droning sound before the phenomenon vanished toward the southeast, hidden by the landscape. No interference was noticed on their on-board equipment.

According to GEIPAN, the witnesses' description and the presence of several airfields nearby, in addition to Lyon-Satolas, make it quite likely that the two officers had seen an aircraft on approach. The case was classified B, probably identified.
