Sighting in Lyon, 1980

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting in 1980 in Lyon (Rhône, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In July 2008, a witness reported an observation made at night in 1980 or 1981, while travelling with two other family members on the motorway between Lyon and Avignon, along its north-south axis. The three of them watched a luminous ball for about thirty seconds. It then split into three stationary parts, and these disappeared into the sky at very high speed.

GEIPAN asked the witness for more details, in particular about the date, which was set only arbitrarily for the file, but these requests have gone unanswered. With too little information available about the sighting, the case was classified C (insufficient data): it is the observation of a luminous phenomenon whose nature could not be established.
