Sighting in Lyon, August 23, 2012

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 23, 2012 in Lyon (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., the witness noticed an unusual point of light in the sky. They then saw this yellow glow moving slowly in a horizontal direction. No particular noise was heard during the sighting. In the end, the point disappeared from view, hidden by the urban landscape.

After several exchanges with the witness, the direction in which they had been looking was established precisely. It matches exactly a pass of the International Space Station (ISS) above the south-western horizon at the same time, as shown by the Calsky data (magnitude -1.6). GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A: the witness had observed the ISS.
