Sighting in Lyon, December 15, 2013

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on December 15, 2013 in Lyon (Rhône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft contrail (class A).

What happened

At around 6:30 pm, the witness was getting some fresh air at a window when they noticed a black dot with two orange trails moving across the sky. They filmed it. The phenomenon eventually vanished at the horizon, and the witness later posted the video online.

The investigation found that orange trails seen at dusk in very clear weather match the contrails of aircraft flying at high altitude, 20 to 100 km away. The video leaves no doubt on this point, and the effect is easy to observe in fine weather toward the west. GEIPAN classified the case A, meaning identified: the witness had certainly observed condensation trails.
