Sighting in Marsolan, January 1, 2015

Gers, Occitanie, France

Sighting on January 1, 2015 in Marsolan (Gers, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 1 a.m., several members of one family were intrigued by lights moving about in a clear sky. There were five luminous spheres: one bright red and the other four bright orange. They made no sound as they moved. They shifted position, rose and dropped, then vanished one after another toward the east. Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation compared these orange balls, which crossed the sky within a few minutes on a night of major celebrations, to Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. However, the observed movement, from southwest to east, fits poorly with the light southerly wind recorded at Auch, 30 km away. The objects' highly variable altitude also seemed unusual; it may have been linked to the intense cold that night (-4°C). Because the local wind was uncertain and there were no photos or other witnesses, GEIPAN classified the case as C, owing to a lack of weather information and corroboration.
