Sighting in Mas-Grenier, August 8, 2020
Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie, France
Sighting on August 8, 2020 in Mas-Grenier (Tarn-et-Garonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a balloon (class A).
What happened
Several witnesses were surprised, at around 10 p.m., by the silent passage of an object that looked like a jellyfish. Blue halos of light surrounded it without lighting up anything but the object itself. It flew low above a cherry tree, in a straight line but with undulating movements, coming from the north. After about 30 seconds it moved away to the south, gradually shrinking to a mere point of light on the horizon before disappearing.
The witness described a north-south path and a slow movement at a height of around 100 m. Their reconstruction drawing showed several round shapes. A few days later, they sent GEIPAN a full questionnaire along with a photo montage.
The investigation checked several points. No aircraft was flying over the area at that time (flightradar24). The witness's house had its terrace facing south, which explains why they only saw the object after it had passed over the house, and could then follow it until it vanished. The wind was light and blowing north to south. The village hall was a few streets to the north. A wedding had taken place that Saturday evening, and the town hall confirmed that the couple had released white balloons tied in bunches early in the night, each with an LED inside. A photo of the preparations was sent to GEIPAN. GEIPAN classified the case as A: a certain misidentification of a cluster of festive LED balloons.
