Sighting in Mauguio, April 27, 2012

Hérault, Occitanie, France

Sighting on April 27, 2012 in Mauguio (Hérault, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).

What happened

The witness saw a yellow light shaped like a crescent moon above the lagoons, seen from the beach, shortly after midnight. The crescent stayed almost still at first, then began moving back and forth. The witness heard no sound during the 40 minutes of the observation, and no other testimony about the phenomenon was gathered.

The GEIPAN investigation found that the direction the witness marked on their sketch, at an azimuth of about 290° toward the west, was very close to where the Moon stood in the sky at that time. The video confirms that the object was the Moon, hidden now and then by clouds. The apparent movements toward the west were an optical illusion: the clouds in the background were drifting east, as the weather record shows. The case is classified A: an observation of the Moon, whose apparent motion was an optical illusion.
