Sighting in Maurens, August 27, 1997

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 27, 1997 in Maurens (Dordogne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., a witness saw six luminous balls turning in the sky. After a while, five of them vanished, leaving a single large, milky-looking sphere that the witness judged to be three times the size of the setting sun. The witness watched it for about half an hour.

The witness called their mother, who saw only the large white sphere and none of the other balls.

The investigation could not prove it, but the description is reminiscent of the effects that advertising laser projectors produce on clouds. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B (probably identified), with laser effects as the probable explanation.
