Sighting in Méjannes-le-Clap, August 14, 2016

Gard, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 14, 2016 in Méjannes-le-Clap (Gard, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).

What happened

On a summer evening, a person on holiday was sitting on a beach in the Gorges de la Cèze, looking at the starry sky. A point of light suddenly crossed the sky at great speed, "like a shooting star". It first followed a straight path, then the witness saw it zigzag before it vanished behind a rock. GEIPAN received only one account, and there was no photograph.

The case was rated as moderately strange and fairly consistent, since the account was quite precise even though no other witness came forward. The description strongly resembles a meteor, although zigzags at the end of the path are rather rare in this kind of misidentification. After doing their own research, the witness agreed with this explanation. However, meteor sighting websites could not confirm it with certainty. The case is classified B: probable misidentification of a meteor.
