Sighting in Meroux, September 26, 2009

Territoire de Belfort, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on September 26, 2009 in Meroux (Territoire de Belfort, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

In late morning, at about 11:11, a witness saw a very bright, silver-colored ball in the sky. It was moving very slowly in a horizontal direction. Then it vanished instantly.

The investigation concluded that this was probably a balloon lit by the sun. Since there was no wind, two possibilities were considered: a child's balloon or a fairground balloon, relatively close by, that burst suddenly, or a distant weather balloon high in the sky. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable sighting of a balloon lit by the sun.
