Sighting in Metz, September 7, 1997

Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 7, 1997 in Metz (Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).

What happened

At around 2 a.m., a couple watching a fireworks display noticed a luminous phenomenon to the right of it, which stayed motionless. At the same moment, in another municipality, a second couple saw the same thing. One of the witnesses filmed the phenomenon, which looked very close, about ten metres above the ground.

The investigation, carried out jointly by the gendarmerie and SEPRA, established unambiguously that the object was the Moon, seen under unusual conditions: the sky was cloudy and an eclipse was beginning. GEIPAN classified the case as A, meaning identified.
