Sighting in Meyronnes, December 8, 1976
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on December 8, 1976 in Meyronnes (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
On the nights of 8 and 9 December 1976, at around 11 p.m., soldiers saw several round flying objects in the sky for a few seconds and could not identify them. The objects moved slowly and silently from the southeast toward the northwest.
About ten kilometres away, a dog-handler platoon noticed that on those same nights its ten dogs had howled mournfully, which was unusual. Another account was also collected: roughly six weeks earlier, a witness had seen a red light at the foot of the ridges rise into the sky and then vanish behind a summit.
Following the soldiers' statement, surveillance was set up from 12 to 30 December, but no further sightings were reported. GEIPAN classified the case as C: objects were seen present and moving slowly in the valley, with no noise heard, but the available information is insufficient to reach a conclusion.
