Sighting in Mirebeau, August 11, 1979

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 11, 1979 in Mirebeau (Vienne, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about 9:10 p.m., as the sun was setting, several people noticed an unusual luminous phenomenon. Three red-orange rings appeared on the horizon, beneath a layer of cloud. They then shrank into a horizontal line, which quickly vanished into the clouds toward the north.

No other witness account was gathered in the area. Based on the witnesses' descriptions, GEIPAN considered it probable that this was an optical effect caused by the setting sun reflecting off a low cloud cover. The case was classified B, probably identified.
