Sighting in Montauban, September 27, 2014

Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on September 27, 2014 in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

The witness noticed a light in the sky and then made out a round, yellow-orange shape. It crossed the night sky without making any noise, taking about two minutes. It moved from the north-east toward the north-west.

GEIPAN considered that an orange ball crossing the sky in a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggests a Thai lantern, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of travel fits the wind recorded at Montauban, which blew from the south-east to the north-east. The case was therefore classed B: probable observation of a Thai lantern.
