Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 3, 2013 in Montcheutin (Ardennes, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class A).

What happened

At around 10:05 p.m., a witness noticed a bright orange, half-circle shape low in the sky and was intrigued by it. It stayed visible for about five minutes. GEIPAN looked into several possible misidentifications and, more than a year after the event, offered to carry out an on-site investigation with the witness. The witness replied that they had already worked out the source of the phenomenon themselves: a distant street lamp.

GEIPAN classed the case as A: the bright orange, stationary, low-altitude light was a street lamp.
