Sighting in Montmorillon, November 19, 1977

Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on November 19, 1977 in Montmorillon (Vienne, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about 1:05 a.m., a driver and their passenger saw a red-orange ball that was moving and coming toward them. The driver stopped, and the ball then stayed motionless in a meadow, about 1.5 m above the ground and some thirty metres from the car. No sound was heard.

Frightened, the driver set off again on a different route, but came across the phenomenon several more times during the trip. The two occupants watched it for a quarter of an hour over a distance of nine kilometres, after which it disappeared.

The investigation found no trace or evidence at any of the places where it had been seen. The head of the Floirac observatory had noticed nothing unusual, and no military exercise had taken place that night. No work had been carried out on the high-voltage line or on the transformers near the roads the driver used. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the sighting was probably an electrical phenomenon, since the ball was always seen moving close to equipment that carries or transforms electricity.
