Sighting in Moreuil, February 1, 1984

Somme, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on February 1, 1984 in Moreuil (Somme, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

After working all night, a motorist was driving when a red ball appeared suddenly above the vehicle. A beam of light forced the witness off the main road. They got out of the car and walked toward the red ball until it vanished. Terrified, they went to find a farmer who was in the field alongside the road.

The farmer had not seen the phenomenon. During the investigation, however, they explained that at the spot of the sighting the rising sun looks like a red ball.

The investigation concluded that several factors, including tiredness and glare from the rising sun, were behind the optical illusion, the fear and the driver's change of direction. The case was classified B, probably identified.
