Sighting in Mortemart, August 8, 2012

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 8, 2012 in Mortemart (Haute-Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

In the late morning, a witness who was with other people noticed a grey-white point of light in the sky. For about fifteen seconds it crossed the sky in a straight line at a constant speed, leaving no trail. The witness was looking south and saw it move from left to right, that is, from east to west. Its apparent size shrank noticeably as it went. Only one account was collected.

The investigation found that these details point to a balloon, whose shape could not be determined. Because its apparent size dropped quickly, it was probably flying at very low altitude. The Limoges weather record shows a wind blowing from the east to north-west at the time, which fits this explanation. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the object was probably a recreational balloon, either a hot-air balloon or one filled with helium.
