Sighting in Mouchamps, December 25, 2014

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on December 25, 2014 in Mouchamps (Vendée, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around 7:15 p.m., on an evening with a clear sky, two witnesses noticed an incandescent trail moving across the night sky. It was fire-yellow at first, then turned blue-white. It moved without making any particular noise and then vanished suddenly. A third person, also in the village, saw it too. Only one witness questionnaire was collected, however.

Given the information gathered during the investigation, GEIPAN classified the case as B: it was probably a Thai lantern, carried along in particular weather conditions, notably wind. GEIPAN did not try to trace whoever released the object, so the explanation is very likely but not certain.
