Sighting in Nancy, September 6, 2009

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est, France

Sighting on September 6, 2009 in Nancy (Meurthe-et-Moselle, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a sky lantern (class A).

What happened

Two witnesses were at home when they saw several orange balls pass from west to east. The balls were all spaced at the same distance from one another, and no sound was heard during the sighting. In the following days, the local press reported that many other people had seen the same thing that night, and that photos and videos had been taken.

The investigation established the source of the phenomenon: about a hundred Thai lanterns had been released during wedding celebrations. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A (identified): the witnesses had observed the passing of these lanterns.
