Loire-Atlantique, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on June 10, 1982 in Nantes Château-Bougon (Loire-Atlantique, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Several people, among them the staff of an airport control tower, noticed a bright point in the sky. The investigation showed that some pilots had also seen this luminous object.

The GEIPAN concluded that it was probably a stratospheric balloon launched by the CNES from the Gap site. After its payload had been released, the balloon was drifting at an altitude of 30,000 to 40,000 metres, carried along by south-westerly winds. The case was classified B, probable observation of a balloon.
