Sighting in Navenne, August 14, 2021
Haute-Saône, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
Sighting on August 14, 2021 in Navenne (Haute-Saône, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class A).
What happened
Around midnight, the witness stepped out onto their terrace to get some fresh air. While looking at the sky, they noticed several dim white lights moving together in a V formation. The lights followed a straight path from the northwest to the southeast at a fairly high speed. The group seemed very close to the witness and eventually vanished behind nearby trees. The sighting lasted roughly 8 to 10 seconds. Only one account was collected, with no photo or video, so the case has a medium level of consistency.
The GEIPAN investigation concluded that this was very probably a flock of birds flying in a V, most likely wild ducks such as mallards, either travelling between their feeding area and their roost or taking part in a partial migration. Several factors support this conclusion: the V shape, the faint brightness of the small lights, the presence of urban lighting, the lack of any sound, the witness's proximity and the speed of movement. The case is classified A: identified.
