Sighting in Ollioules, August 29, 1980

Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on August 29, 1980 in Ollioules (Var, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 8:50 p.m., two witnesses were on their terrace when they noticed an unusual phenomenon in the sky. A ball, which looked black because it was seen against the light, came from the west and passed very quickly directly over the house.

The witnesses saw its shape change. They then made out about a dozen square portholes that seemed to be lit from inside. An intense light suddenly appeared, and the whole object vanished toward the east. The entire sighting lasted 20 to 30 seconds, and no noise was noticed.

No other testimony was collected about this phenomenon. Because of the lack of information, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data): it was the observation of an object that changed shape and disappeared suddenly.
