Sighting in Oullins, August 2, 2014

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 2, 2014 in Oullins (Rhône, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 11 p.m., several witnesses saw about ten red objects drifting across the sky. The objects made no sound and stayed in view for a few minutes. The sighting took place late on a Saturday evening.

GEIPAN considered that these red or orange balls strongly resembled Thai lanterns released at the end of a party. The weather record from Lyon Bron shows a very light and highly unstable wind, so it was not possible to work out its direction at that moment or to compare it with the path of the objects. The witnesses did note, however, that the objects moved slowly, which fits with a light wind.

The case was classified B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
