Sighting in Panazol, July 14, 2023

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on July 14, 2023 in Panazol (Haute-Vienne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

At around 8:40 pm, a family was having dinner outdoors when one of them noticed an object crossing the sky silently, which they could not identify. It was very bright and shaped like a large capsule, with no condensation trail. Only one account was collected. The witness first put the object's elevation at 50°, then at 70°.

The investigation established that it was a Boeing 738 flying from Bristol to Barcelona. It passed east of the witness, heading roughly north–south, at 37,000 feet (about 11.28 km). That gives an elevation of about 62°, which fits the witness's estimates, since it is hard to judge an angle above the horizon without a fixed reference point.

The oddness the witness perceived came from the lack of a condensation trail. Such trails do not always form: they depend on pressure, temperature and humidity, particularly in cold air. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of an airliner.
