Sighting in Parempuyre, January 8, 2015
Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on January 8, 2015 in Parempuyre (Gironde, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a bright star (class A).
What happened
At around 7:35 p.m., a witness traveling in a vehicle saw five points of light through a gap in the clouds, for about one minute. Three of them were perfectly aligned, and the other two completed the pattern to form a diamond shape.
A few days later, the witness worked out the explanation on their own. Under a clear sky, they saw the same sight in the same direction: the three aligned points were Orion's Belt, part of the constellation Orion. Seen on their own between clouds, without the surrounding stars, these stars had briefly looked strange.
GEIPAN classified the case as A: the observation was definitely the constellation Orion seen between clouds.
