Sighting in Peigney, June 4, 2012
Haute-Marne, Grand Est, France
Sighting on June 4, 2012 in Peigney (Haute-Marne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).
What happened
At around 3 a.m., through the picture window of their living room, the witness saw an orange, column-shaped light in the direction of a hill about 2 km away. After fifteen seconds it went out abruptly. Two yellow balls of light then appeared and moved around the spot where the first light had been, before also going out just as suddenly.
The next day the witness went to the place where they thought the sighting had occurred and found no burnt grass and no trampled ground. There was only one witness account. GEIPAN did not receive the questionnaire until 2016, four years after the event.
GEIPAN considered that a ground-level phenomenon seen at that distance was not particularly strange. The witness themselves suggested a campfire or a flame, and the nearby chapel can host scouts. It could also have been farm machinery surrounded by people carrying lamps. The lack of any traces the following day does not rule out any of these explanations. The same witness described a similar observation in 2016 on the same hill, within a few dozen metres, probably of the same origin. The case was classified B: lights on the ground from a vehicle or campfire, with people carrying flashlights.
