Sighting in Neuilly-lès-Dijon, June 14, 2015

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on June 14, 2015 in Neuilly-lès-Dijon (Côte-d'Or, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

On a Sunday morning at about 5:10 a.m., the witness, standing at a window, saw seven or eight luminous phenomena pass across the sky one after another, in silence. They were spherical and orange. The sighting lasted around ten minutes, until the objects vanished into the clouds. The witness managed to take photographs, but they turned out to be illegible. The witness then went to the gendarmerie. No other testimony was collected, and the local press offered no explanation in the following days.

The lights moved from the southwest toward the northwest. Orange lights crossing the sky within a few minutes on a weekend night suggested Thai lanterns, possibly released nearby after a private party. If so, the objects would have been carried by a south or southeast wind. The Météociel record for the Dijon air base, close to the place of observation, shows a very variable wind at 5 a.m., light from the southeast at 4 a.m. and from the east at 6 a.m. It can neither confirm nor rule out the idea of wind-borne objects. The primary radar data around Dijon, requested by the GEIPAN, showed only airliners at high altitude. The fact that the photos were unusable points to how faint the lights were.

The account is compatible with Thai lanterns, but the GEIPAN does not have enough evidence to confirm that hypothesis. The case is classified C because of a lack of information and cross-checking.
