Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on July 22, 1978 in Pierre-Buffière (Haute-Vienne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty (class A).

What happened

Late in the evening, at about 11:45 p.m., several people noticed a very bright yellow-orange light in the sky, with rays seemingly coming from it. One of the witnesses watched it through binoculars for about fifteen minutes, until it disappeared.

The GEIPAN compared the direction in which the witnesses were looking with the position of Venus, which was particularly easy to see at that time of year. It concluded that this was an astronomical observation of the planet, and the case is classified A (identified).
