Sighting in Pierrevert, June 10, 2015

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on June 10, 2015 in Pierrevert (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, at around 00:20, a witness heard a low-pitched noise coming from outside. They went out onto their terrace and watched a flying craft for about three minutes; its sound resembled a lawnmower engine. The object was circular and dark, surrounded by a fluorescent green halo. It came from the west and flew in a straight line toward the east, then vanished into low cloud. The day had been stormy. Only one witness account was collected.

The investigation considered a paramotor flying at night, with its canopy lit by a floodlight behind the pilot. This idea fits the description fairly well. A paramotor club in Manosque, when consulted, said that night flying was not practised in the area as far as it knew. Such flights are tightly regulated and tolerated only with a special exemption, in clear weather and around the full moon. Neither condition was met that night: the sky was cloudy and the Moon was at last quarter. The hypothesis could therefore not be confirmed and was judged extremely unlikely, though not impossible. Because of insufficient information and a lack of corroboration, the GEIPAN classified the case as C.
