Sighting in Pont-Saint-Esprit, July 12, 2018

Gard, Occitanie, France

Sighting on July 12, 2018 in Pont-Saint-Esprit (Gard, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 11:20 p.m., a witness was out on their terrace when they noticed a black, triangular shape in the night sky. They described it as made up of two distinct parts, with round lights. The object moved across the sky in a straight line, with no sound heard, and was soon hidden from view by a house. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN rated the case as moderately strange but of low consistency: there was only one witness, and the account was at times imprecise and contained some ambiguities. Several hypotheses could explain what was described, but none could be favoured. The length of the sighting was contradictory: a few seconds in the free-text account, but one to two minutes in the technical questionnaire. The object's angular height did not match the testimony, and its trajectory remained unknown. GEIPAN contacted the witness several times, notably to obtain the sketch mentioned in the questionnaire, but received nothing further. The case was classified C: insufficient data, phenomenon unidentifiable.
