Sighting in Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt, August 15, 2014

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 15, 2014 in Port-Sainte-Foy-et-Ponchapt (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Around midnight, the witness saw two bright orange objects crossing the sky slowly and without making any noise. The witness went to wake their partner. The two objects eventually vanished, and three others then appeared and passed in front of the Moon.

In all, a series of circular objects, bright orange to yellow in colour, had moved across the sky within a few minutes, on the eve of a public holiday. This strongly suggested Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The objects had drifted eastward, which matches the wind recorded at Bergerac: light and from the south-west. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
