Sighting in Préseau, August 10, 2008

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 10, 2008 in Préseau (Nord, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a planet (class A).

What happened

A witness phoned the GEIPAN to describe something they had seen in the company of other people, including gendarmes. During the night, between about 11 p.m. and 2:17 a.m., two bright points of light resembling stars were watched, first with the naked eye and then through binoculars. At first they stayed still in the sky, then they moved slowly.

A similar sighting took place about twelve days later, at 10:35 p.m., in the same direction but a little closer to the horizon.

The investigation showed that the witnesses had observed two stars, Arcturus and Capella, which are particularly visible at that time of year. The case was classified A: it was an astronomical observation.
