Sighting in Raucourt-et-Flaba, August 8, 2009

Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on August 8, 2009 in Raucourt-et-Flaba (Ardennes, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A woman was driving at around 11 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., with a passenger beside her. For two or three seconds she saw an object above a wind turbine. It was disc-shaped, slightly oval and silvery in colour. It vanished so quickly that the passenger had no time to see it. The main witness watched from inside the car and was in a highly emotional state.

The case reached the panel of experts working with the GEIPAN late, and a preliminary investigation was inconclusive. The analysis showed that the object's apparent size, about 4°, matches that of a possible reflection of the Moon on a blade of the wind turbine, a reflection the main witness had mentioned themselves. Apart from this hypothesis, the sighting had little strangeness, and only one witness saw the phenomenon, since the second person made no direct observation. The GEIPAN classified the case as C: an unexplained case with little substance and no strange characteristics.
