Sighting in Reignac-sur-Indre, September 30, 2018

Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on September 30, 2018 in Reignac-sur-Indre (Indre-et-Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 1:45 a.m., a driver and their spouse were heading home from an evening party along the D58. Through the trees, above the fields, they noticed three orange lights. The lights looked stationary and formed a triangle. After a few minutes they disappeared. There were two witnesses but no photos or videos, so the GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as medium.

The investigation retained only one hypothesis: three Thai lanterns, probably released from a hamlet or village in the area during a private party. The color, shape, brightness and number of objects all fit this kind of lantern. The impression of stillness can be explained by the light wind and by the movement of the car. A Saturday-to-Sunday night is a likely time for parties, and such lanterns generally last no more than 15 minutes, which matches the observed duration. Since the release point could not be identified and the consistency was medium, the case was classified B: probable sighting of a group of three Thai lanterns.
