Sighting in Rive-de-Gier, May 11, 2013

Loire, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 11, 2013 in Rive-de-Gier (Loire, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

One evening at about 10:30 pm, a witness saw five yellow-orange points of light appear in the sky to the north-east of the town. They moved slowly. Their brightness gradually faded, and then they disappeared.

The GEIPAN investigation pointed out that the sighting took place on a Saturday night, which fits well with Thai lanterns released during a celebration. Such lanterns drift wherever the wind takes them, and the wind at that moment was very light and variable, according to the Météociel record for Saint-Étienne. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable sighting of Thai lanterns.
