Sighting in Rochejean, April 19, 2011

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on April 19, 2011 in Rochejean (Doubs, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).

What happened

At 21:37 in the evening, two people were on the terrace of a house when they saw a white luminous sphere move slowly and in a straight line across the sky, above the ridge of the Risoux massif. It travelled from the southwest toward the northeast. The main witness filmed the sighting.

The gendarmerie could not draw any interpretation from the footage: the zoom had been set to its maximum, causing heavy camera shake and artefacts, and the images did not convey what the witness had actually seen. The investigation did find, however, that the directions and the time of the observation matched a pass of the International Space Station exactly. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as A, meaning fully identified.
