Sighting in Rodez, April 18, 2008

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on April 18, 2008 in Rodez (Aveyron, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

In the night of 17 to 18 April 2008, at 12:43 a.m., the witness was at home when they noticed two lights above the town, toward the south-southeast. They watched them first with the naked eye, then through a telescope, and through it the lights seemed to vibrate. The witness then took five handheld photographs: the first three 15 to 20 seconds apart, the last two about seven minutes later.

The witness was the only person to report the sighting. GEIPAN looked at several possible explanations: aircraft, an astronomical object, or something connected with festivities. The case showed low strangeness and low consistency, and the photographs, which were blurred by camera movement, could not be used. Several of its features could point to different explanations. However, the long delay before the file was handled, the vagueness of the account and the witness's lack of response to GEIPAN's requests made a firm identification impossible. The case was classified C, for insufficient data.
