Sighting in Rosheim, March 4, 2010

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on March 4, 2010 in Rosheim (Bas-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a light from the ground (searchlight, laser, vehicle…) (class B).

What happened

At around 8:30 p.m., a witness who was out in a car noticed lights in the sky that they considered "suspicious" and could not explain. They saw the lights again several times afterwards, always in the same spot.

The investigation concluded that these were most likely spotlights illuminating the many castles on the heights of the Black Forest, due east, on the German side of the Franco-German border. The sighting took place during a festive period in both France and Germany: at this time of year, very colorful carnival celebrations (the Kappensitzung) are held, and they are very popular in Germany. GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified, with the lights attributed to festivities in Germany.
