Sighting in Roubaix, August 1, 1981

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 1, 1981 in Roubaix (Nord, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At around 8:30 p.m., a motorist noticed a red fireball due west. It then split in two. It gradually shrank and its color shifted toward orange, and it vanished by blending into the haze. No sound was heard at any point during the observation.

The GEIPAN classified the case as B, meaning probably identified. Several elements of the account match the setting sun, as two of the witnesses themselves pointed out. The red light phenomenon was therefore most likely the sunset.
