Sighting in Saint François Longchamp, January 21, 2010

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on January 21, 2010 in Saint François Longchamp (Savoie, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

A witness saw a group of flashing white lights between 7:42 and 7:45 a.m. The lights were located between two peaks, the Grosse Tête and the Grand Miceau, and moved slowly. They eventually disappeared behind the terrain.

The investigation found that a weather balloon sounding had been launched near Saint-Exupéry airport about an hour and forty minutes before the sighting. The most plausible explanation is that the witness saw these balloons lit by the rising sun. GEIPAN classified the case as B: it was most likely a train of weather balloons.
