Sighting in Coublevie, August 3, 2014

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 3, 2014 in Coublevie (Isère, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At 1 a.m. on a weekend night, a witness looking out of a window was frightened to see a ball of fire cross the sky without a sound. It followed a straight path and slowly moved away to the northeast, toward Saint-Etienne de Crossey. The sighting was very short, about one minute. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation compared these details with a Thai lantern, probably released at the end of a party. A hall where a wedding was being celebrated stood nearby, which makes this explanation highly probable. The weather stations at Grenoble-Le-Versoud and Grenoble-Saint-Geoirs recorded a weak, highly variable wind, so the wind could not be determined in this valley area. Even though the lantern explanation is entirely plausible, GEIPAN classified the case C because it lacked cross-checking: there was only one witness and the local wind remained undetermined.
