Sighting in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne, August 29, 2015

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on August 29, 2015 in Saint-Georges-de-Didonne (Charente-Maritime, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

A family watched the sky for more than an hour, between 9:45 and 11:00 p.m., and saw several orange or white points of light go past one after another. Some faded out gradually, while others were lost from view as they drifted off in various directions. No sound was heard at any point during the observation. GEIPAN collected only one witness account.

The investigation considered that orange or white lights in the sky on a weekend night strongly suggest Thai lanterns, probably released nearby after a private party. The way the lights went out one by one supports this, since it matches the burners in the lanterns running out of fuel. The account was very brief and could not be compared with the wind conditions. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable Thai lanterns.
