Sighting in Saint-Germain-du-Puch, January 1, 2010

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on January 1, 2010 in Saint-Germain-du-Puch (Gironde, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On New Year's Eve, at around half past midnight, a witness noticed a red ball with a yellow outline in the sky. It was moving slowly from the west toward the north, which intrigued the witness. They watched it for about three minutes before it suddenly shot off.

The GEIPAN considered the case only slightly strange and very thin on substance. It concluded that the witness had most likely mistaken a Thai lantern for something unusual. The case is therefore classed B: probably identified, most likely the passage of a Thai lantern.
